A Brief History

The 20th Century Striking Resemblance was only together a brief three years, but the experience created friendships that have lasted a lifetime.  The 21st Century Striking Resemblance got back together in 2010 and has been playing together off and on for 7 years.  Of course, we've always been known as a 60s band.  For decades it was because we played the music of the 60s. Today, it can also be in reference to our average ages. (Ouch!)  Either way, our relationships and history together are rare gifts that we share with each other.    The music is also a gift, with which we remember bandmates that we wish could join us now, and which we share with our friends who have listened and danced and enjoyed since our first downbeat on our first song in 1967.

Special thanks to Betty Bryant, Steve's Mom, for saving and providing many of the images, business cards, and promotional posters on this site.

1967-68

In the summer of 1967 Mel Dixon (trumpet, vocals & bass), Denny"The Kid" Silva (vocals and guitar),  Bob "Bump" Walters (vocals and organ), Ellis "Elrod" Drury (guitar), David Harris (vocals and trumpet) and Steve Holcomb (drums)  formed Frodo and The Hobbits and began playing in the Brunswick area.  As fall approached, singer/trumpeter David Harris and drummer Steve Holcomb  left the group to head off to college.  Replacing them were Jimmy Drew on trumpet and Steve Bryant on drums.  Dixon and Bryant would be the only two members to remain with the group from this point on until  the group disbanded in the fall of 1970.

Mel Dixon, was generally considered the group's leader, not only because the band practiced at his house in a really cool band room complete with pool table, and not just because his dad provided the loan for the group's equipment, but also because he was a take-charge guy who didn't take any crap from anyone.  The group underwent a name change to The Sixth Sense for one gig in Darien, GA.  But, because the name sounded too much like The 6 Cents the group soon became know as The Striking Resemblance, a name generally credited to singer and lead guitar player "The Kid" Silva.

In 67 and 68 the band was to play The Glynco Teen Club, The Casino on St. Simons, The Glynco 1-6 Enlisted Mens Club, The Darien Teen Club, The Beach Comber on St. Simons, The Wanderer Hotel's Sky Room on Jekyll Island, The Glynco Officers Club, a variety of private parties, Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, The Brunswick Junior College Student Center and surely other venues that escape the group's collective memories.  During this period the group rehearsed with and briefly included Nancy Fowler on vocals for a couple of songs at one private party gig.

Playing in a band was new to most of the group and the thought of getting paid to have that much fun seemed as if it shouldn't be legal.   A week in the band's life would consist of 2 practices at Mel's; pack up the gear on Friday and/or Saturday; play, get paid and meet at Shoney's for a post performance Big Boy and/or strawberry pie.  Ah, life was so good.

The group was outfitted with matching Fender Baseman amps, a Fender PA, Fender reverbs,  a Lowrey organ, Fender Mustang lead guitar, Fender bass, rhythm guitar and trumpets of unrememberable  brands, and a red sparkle Silvertone drum set with the group's name emblazoned on the front head by none other than Brunswick's renowned sign painter Jolly Jeorge.  They moved from matching burgundy turtlenecks with navy slacks to white ruffled pirate shirts that  looked way cool -- If you don't believe it, just check out the photos below -- and didn't show lint under black lights like the dark turtlenecks did.

This first version of the band played together until sometime in late 68 when Uncle Sam said to Kid, "come here boy, gimme that guitar, take this rifle" leading to a U.S. Army tour. Drew went away to UGA and Bump was accepted to and attended The Citadel.

1968-69

The next version of The Striking Resemblance expanded from a 6-piece to an 8-piece group. The transition saw the group gain another Silva by adding Denny's sister Natalie (vocals) along with her fiance Dennis Williams (guitar). Also added were Gordon "Butch" Dukes (vocals),  Ken Faulkenberry (trumpet, bass), and David Egan (organ, sax). During this period a few drop ins also came and went.  There was a bassist named "Brillo", former Gypsy vocalist Ward Teston, and a rhythm guitar player with a Gretsch Country Gentleman whose name is unknown.

The group's line up now included dreamy female vocals and soulful male leads along with strength at every instrument. With the addition of female vocals, male/female duets, solid horn backing and a tight rhythm section, this was a very versatile version of the band.  From Dione Warwick, to Sam and Dave, to the Doors, if it was Top 40 it was on the band's set list. As a result, in addition to the group's existing venues they became in demand for high school proms in South Georgia  and North Florida.   They appeared at The Bitter End in South Carolina, The Blue Jacket Club at NAS Jacksonville, Fort Stewart's enlisted men's club, various dances at Gould Auditorium on Jekyll along with events at the Holiday Inn's Frederica room in downtown Brunswick.

It should also be noted that Natalie Silva-Williams brought to the group the only "class" we could ever hope to attain. When she sang, it was a special treat for everyone on-stage and off. Fortunately for the couple, Natalie and Dennis were married during this incarnation of the band.  Unfortunately for the band, they decided to leave the group, along with Butch for reasons we can't remember.   Bummer . . .

But the show must go on and there was still a lot of life left in The Striking Resemblance.

1969-70

As the band that just wouldn't quit, The Striking Resemblance entered its final phase through the fortunate addition of Dino Ferrari (his real name, not a stage name we promise, on vocals), Mike Herring (vocals, guitar), Jimmy Sellers (vocals, valve trombone, guitar) and Jack Evans (trumpet).

On-stage apparel went from ruffled shirts to matching ties and white slacks that looked outstanding under backlights. The addition of a Jimmy's trombone fattened the horn section. Dino's suave stage presence and silky vocals were a plus. Focusing on bass exclusively, Ken proved to be even more of a bad ass than on trumpet.  Mike hit his stride quickly and soon his Fender Coronado was driving everything from "Tighten Up" to "Purple Haze".

This version of the band stayed busy thanks to Chief Martin of Twin Star Production, the only professional management the group ever had.  There were big dances around major high school games at The Brunswick Recreation Center and Gould Auditorium.  The Resemblance was co-booked with another Twin Star act The Runaways (who are still playing as The Flood Brothers and still sound great) at the Aquarama. There were fund raisers with Rhonda and the Chessmen at Gould Auditorium, promoted dances at the St. Andrews Auditorium on Jekyll, plus a BHS dance with the WAPE DJs at the Frederica Room downtown.

Twin Star had the group playing everywhere; fashion shows at the Brunswick Mall; grand openings of car dealerships; the county fairgrounds; wild and crazy-assed parties at the south-end hotel on Jekyll for the Jaycees (and those guys used to know how to party).  The band played a Sunn sponsored music festival at the Jax Beach auditorium, a Sigma Alpha Delta party at the Buccaneer restaurant in Midway, became a regular fixture at the infamous Ranch nightclub on highway 17 (think Blues Brothers chicken wire gig without the chicken wire) and continued to play all of the Glynco venues along with the Darien Teen Club and Fort Stewart. The group garnered news coverage when it traveled to The Roosevelt Warm Springs, rehabilitation center to entertain patients there. Plus, if you attended the July 4th fireworks shows at the St. Simons pier in '69 or '70, that was The Striking Resemblance in the park playing Credence, Otis Redding, Cream and more.

A memorable Florida tour saw the the group opening for Billy Joe Royal backed by his Royal Blues at the Jacksonville Beach Auditorium (great band). As they moved from performance to performance, the Striking Resemblance was easy to spot in their GTO-Judge-orange, 4-door Dodge pickup featuring Ken's peace sign logo on the side.  Groovy.

Before the group disbanded in the late summer of 1970, they spent a Sunday afternoon in the Wanderer Hotel Sky Room on Jekyll recording a few songs through 2 mics in the back of the room onto a quarter track 2-channel Sony reel-to-reel.  The product of that afternoon was pressed as a vinyl demo album that the band loving refers to as the "Suitable for Flushing" LP.   We think it sold 7 copies and there were 8 guys in the band.  It's included for free download below, just in case our families might want to hear it.
